The 1064nm/532nm Q-Switched ND: YAG Laser is a versatile and powerful tool widely used in various medical, industrial, and scientific applications. This laser system operates at two primary wavelengths: 1064 nanometers (nm) in the infrared spectrum and 532 nm in the visible green spectrum. The Q-switching technology allows for the generation of high-intensity, short-duration pulses, making it particularly effective for precision tasks such as laser marking, tattoo removal, skin rejuvenation, and material processing.
Fundamental Principles
1. ND: YAG Laser Crystal:
The core component of this laser system is the Neodymium-doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (ND: YAG) crystal. When optically pumped, typically by a flashlamp or diode laser, the ND: YAG crystal emits light at a wavelength of 1064 nm. This wavelength is in the near-infrared region and is invisible to the human eye.
2. Frequency Doubling:
To achieve the 532 nm wavelength, a frequency-doubling crystal, such as Potassium Titanyl Phosphate (KTP), is used. This crystal converts the 1064 nm infrared light into 532 nm green light through a process known as second harmonic generation (SHG). The green light is visible and is often preferred for applications requiring high visibility and precision.
3. Q-Switching Mechanism:
Q-switching is a technique used to produce high-peak-power laser pulses. In a Q-switched laser, the quality factor (Q) of the optical resonator is temporarily lowered to prevent lasing action, allowing energy to build up within the gain medium. When the Q-factor is restored, the stored energy is released in the form of a short, intense pulse. This results in pulse durations typically in the nanosecond range, with peak powers significantly higher than those achievable in continuous-wave (CW) operation.
Applications
1. Medical Applications:
Tattoo Removal: The 1064 nm wavelength is highly effective for targeting dark ink pigments, while the 532 nm wavelength is used for brighter colors like red and orange. The short pulses break down the ink particles, which are then naturally eliminated by the body.
Skin Rejuvenation: The laser promotes collagen production and skin tightening, reducing the appearance of wrinkles, scars, and pigmentation.
